SPRJ Kanyashala Trust

The SPRJ Kanyashala Trust is the parent organization for PN Doshi College. It also administers many of SHAMA. Inc.'s programs in India -- for a list, click here.

SHAMA, Inc. and its predecessor, the India Project, began collaborating with the Trust in 1988. The amount of SHAMA, Inc's contribution has grown considerably since the first year when $500 was raised. The increase is only possible due to the generosity of our donors and the work of our able volunteers. The Trust does not give money directly to the recipients; instead, the money is spent through the Trust on their behalf, as designated by SHAMA, Inc.

The Trust administers several of our programs in India. The number and types of programs have grown each year. Currently they include:

  • Scholarships. We began in 1988 by giving scholarships to needy students at PN Doshi College.  This work continues.
  • The ShamaKids program, started in 2002, continues to sponsor children's education.
  • Mhaskal Village was brought under the care of the Trust early in 2004, and we expand our support there as we learn more about their needs. Our work in Mhaskal Village has helped the people there so much that surrounding villages are hoping we can do similar things for them.
  • The SHAMA WELL program, started in 2005, continues to make loans to women, giving them a start in income-generating project.
  • Health-related programs administered through the SPRJ Kanyashala Trust.
  • Adult literacy classes

SHAMA, Inc. continues to be inspired for additional programs and projects to assist impoverished women and children in India. Because of the growth of SHAMA, Inc.'s work with the Trust, a part time office assistant was hired in India to assist SHAMA, Inc. in its work. All the teachers work on a voluntary basis.
